Wisteria, Gravel and a Pool That Was Never Dug: Wood-Grain Container Pools in the French Countryside

Old stone houses come with ground you do not want to open. There are roots, drainage runs, the footings of a wall that predates the plumbing, and a courtyard that has taken two hundred years to settle. Cutting a hole in it for a pool is the one renovation that cannot be quietly undone.

It is also the renovation most likely to be wanted. A farmhouse in the Vaucluse or the Luberon with wisteria over the pergola and lavender along the wall is a house that asks for water.

The pool as furniture, not as construction

A container pool is placed, not built. The unit arrives finished in wood-grain composite cladding with black trim holding every edge crisp — a surface that reads as timber from three metres and behaves like a panel from three centimetres. It sits on gravel, on paving, on a slab. Nothing is excavated, nothing is poured.

The reason it can sit on gravel at all is the frame: galvanized steel, 80 x 120 x 2.75 mm main beams and 50 x 70 x 2.75 mm side beams, carrying a moulded fiberglass basin with a resin gel coat. The load goes down through the D-ring lifting points and the frame, not through the ground beneath.

Steps you walk down, not a ladder you climb

The entry stair is moulded into the shell rather than bolted on afterwards. In a household with children, or with guests of a certain age, that single decision changes how the pool is used. There is no floating ladder to drift, no frame to corrode at the waterline, and no gap behind the steps where leaves collect.

The service area closes behind a louvered panel, so the pump and filter do not become part of the view from the kitchen. Two IP68 18 W LED lights sit under the waterline, four on the longest size. The optional PAC60 heat pump, 16 kW, is rated for basins up to 60 m³ and turns a July pool into a May-to-October pool.

Reversible

Nothing about the installation is permanent in the way a dug pool is. The unit can be drained, lifted by crane and moved — to another property, another courtyard, another season of use. For a family that bought the house with the intention of selling it again, or for an owner who is not certain where the pool should finally live, that is worth more than it sounds.

And if the plan changes, the same frame and liner allow the unit to be partly or fully recessed into the ground later. The pool does not have to decide the courtyard's future on the day it arrives.
