Two-storey modular shelters: more beds on the same footprint

Two-storey modular shelters: more beds on the same footprint
সংবাদ বিস্তারিত

In a shelter, land is usually the scarcest resource. When the assigned plot cannot take the number of families, the only technical answer is to stack. A single-storey module turned into two doubles capacity without enlarging the footprint or moving a single service connection.

How stacking works without compromising structure

The standard module transfers load through the frame corner blocks, exactly like a sea container. That allows one unit to sit on another, bearing on the four corner points with a distribution plate between them. The conditions that make stacking safe rather than improvised:

  • Corner blocks galvanised at 3.5 / 4.0 mm, not 3.0 mm black iron.
  • Frame at measured actual thickness: 2.2 / 2.45 / 2.75 / 3.0 mm in our configuration.
  • Point foundations, level, under all four supports of the lower unit.
  • Access stairs outside, anchored to the structure, so they take no internal floor area.

Two storeys with the staircase anchored to the frame: circulation takes no habitable area.

The balcony is functional, not decorative

On the upper floor a perimeter balcony with railing is the secondary escape route and the place where laundry goes. In our builds the balcony is framed in its own profile and anchored to the corner blocks, not to the facade panel. That avoids the classic failure: a balcony bolted to a sandwich panel that pulls away when someone leans on it or when wind loads the railing.

Which types stack well

  • Family bedroom: ground floor for families with reduced mobility, upper floor for the rest.
  • Sanitary module: always ground floor, for gravity drainage and accessibility.
  • Management and reception: ground floor next to the main access.
  • Collective dormitory: upper floor, single controlled entrance.

What to verify before signing

  • Measured thickness of profiles and corner blocks, not declared.
  • Unit weight: the indirect indicator of how much steel is in the frame.
  • Calculation of the distribution plate between floors and its fixing.
  • Wind resistance test report for the stacked configuration.
  • Lifting plan: anchor points, slings and sequence, with the unit closed or open.
If your programme needs to double capacity on a constrained site, we issue the stacking scheme, staircase and balcony on your site drawing, with the distribution plate calculation included in the design documentation.

The real cost of stacking

Stacking does not double cost: it adds the staircase, the balcony, the distribution plate and some assembly time. Against the alternative of finding a larger site it is almost always cheaper — and in an emergency programme the alternative site rarely exists.
