A Camp Specification Written by Geology
Chilean copper projects, from the Atacama desert to the high Andes, impose three constraints on workforce housing that most container suppliers never have to answer: active seismicity, extreme diurnal temperature range, and a very long freight lane from China.
Flat pack container housing can meet all three, but only when the specification is written for Chile rather than copied from a generic template. This is what changes.
Constraint 1: Seismic Grade
Seismic resistance is not a marketing claim in Chile, it is a design input. Standard flat pack units are built to a seismic grade of not less than level 7, with a main frame in 2.3-3.0 mm spray-painted galvanized steel tube and galvanized square-tube purlins. For Chilean projects, three things should be added to the purchase order:
- The seismic grade stated explicitly in the technical schedule, not only in a brochure
- Anchor and foundation details, since the connection to the ground matters as much as the frame
- Confirmation of how multi-unit blocks are tied together, because a row of units behaves differently from a single unit
Constraint 2: Desert Temperature Swing
Atacama sites can swing from near-freezing nights to daytime temperatures above 30°C. That makes insulation thickness a cost decision rather than a comfort preference.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Footprint | 6000 x 3000 x 2840 mm, customizable |
| Wall panel | 50 / 75 / 100 mm rock wool, EPS or PU with 0.3-0.5 mm colour steel plate |
| Recommended for desert / altitude | 75-100 mm rock wool for thermal stability and fire performance |
| Roof and ceiling | Insulated ceiling, with roof options specified for solar gain |
| Frame | 2.3-3.0 mm spray-painted galvanized steel tube |
| Wind resistance | 100 km/h standard, project classes on request |
| Service life | 8-10 years standard, up to 30 years with upgraded specification |
| Loading | 18 units per 40HQ |
| Price / MOQ | USD 800-1,050 per unit; minimum 4 units |
Dust is the second desert factor. Sliding windows need proper seals and the specification should state the window type, not leave it to the factory default.
Constraint 3: The Long Freight Lane
A shipment from Jiangsu to San Antonio or Antofagasta is one of the longest container routes in the world, and freight is a large share of landed cost. This is where flat pack earns its place in the Chilean market: 18 units load into a single 40HQ container. For a 200-bed camp, that is roughly 12 containers instead of 200 container slots, which converts directly into a freight line item the project can defend.
Assembly at Altitude
High-altitude sites reduce the productivity of any manual work, and this is where bolted flat pack construction wins over welding. Units assemble with basic tools and a small crew, no welding, no specialist plant. On a site above 3,000 m, avoiding hot work also removes a permit category and a fire watch from the daily planning.
What Chilean Buyers Should Specify
- Seismic grade, anchoring method and block tie details in writing
- Rock wool rather than EPS at altitude, for fire performance and thermal stability
- Wind class matched to the site, not the standard 100 km/h rating
- Electrical package to CE or IEC, named explicitly alongside the structural certification
- ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001, CE, SGS inspection, fireproof and wind test reports, as a document pack
Where Expandable Fits In
For Chilean camps, the pattern is usually flat pack for dormitories, canteens, clinics and offices, and expandable container houses for family accommodation and site management, where a single unit needs to reach 72 m² with an internal bathroom and kitchen. Sourcing both from one factory keeps panels, fittings and certification consistent across the camp.
Sourcing Note
Global Container (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. has supplied modular housing since 2012 with 2,000 detachable units of monthly capacity, 200+ clients and exports to more than 30 countries. Chilean project buyers can request seismic documentation and a container loading plan for their specific unit mix before ordering.
