From Salt Flats to Deserts: How One Expandable House Survived Three of Earth's Harshest Environments

When a Hollywood production company needed 42 crew quarters on Bolivia's Uyuni salt flat, three modular housing suppliers declined the job. The site sits at 3,656 meters. The 42 expandable units deployed were standard 20-foot frames with two critical upgrades: hot-dip galvanized steel and 75mm rockwool sandwich panels. The galvanization — real molten-zinc submersion, not spray paint — forms a carbonate barrier on the metal surface that salt cannot penetrate. The rockwool panels, with a thermal conductivity of approximately 0.040 W/(m·K), slow heat transfer to a crawl. Every wall panel seam was embedded with EPDM gaskets rated for -40°C to +120°C.

The units were produced in three weeks, shipped from Shanghai, and assembled on the salt crust in five days by a local crew of eight.
