Fence, Lawn, Long Weekend: A Wood-Grain Container Pool for the Suburban Backyard

Fence, Lawn, Long Weekend: A Wood-Grain Container Pool for the Suburban Backyard
समाचार विवरण

The suburban backyard is a rectangle with a fence around it and a lawn inside. Most of the year it is a lawn. For about fourteen weekends it could be something else, if getting there did not cost an entire summer and a second mortgage.

That arithmetic is why the above-ground pool never went away, and why it has always looked like a compromise. A container pool is the same idea with the compromise removed: it arrives finished, in a material that belongs next to a timber fence and a grey house, with steps you walk down rather than a ladder you climb.

Timber looks, panel behaviour

The cladding is a wood-grain composite board with black trim. It picks up the colour of a cedar fence and the shade of a shingled roof, which is why it disappears into a backyard instead of standing in it. The board does not need oiling, does not grey out, and does not care about chlorine splash.

Behind it: a moulded fiberglass basin with a resin gel coat, in a galvanized steel frame of 80 x 120 x 2.75 mm main beams and 50 x 70 x 2.75 mm side beams. The viewing window is 12 + 12 mm laminated tempered glass, and the service area closes behind a louvered panel — so the pump is not the first thing visible from the patio door.

The weekend it goes in

Ground preparation, a crane lift on the D-ring points, a power connection, a hose. No excavation for above-ground installation, no concrete, no tiling crew. Every set arrives complete with pump WQ20-15-2.2 at 20 m³/h, skimmer 500 Slim, QSS-60 salt chlorinator, 30 mm polyurethane insulation, sand filter and pre-assembled pipework, plus IP68 LED lights.

What that means in practice: the pool that was a plan in March is a pool in June, and the lawn survives.

What actually gets used

The longest size is 8.8 m overall with a 5.8 x 2.1 x 1.4 m basin — enough for laps, and enough that four people are not standing in each other's space. The shorter sizes at 3.9 m and 5.5 m suit the yards where the pool is for cooling off and for the children rather than for training.

Two lights on the shorter sizes, four on the longest. Heat pump optional — the PAC60 at 16 kW is rated for basins up to 60 m³ — which is what turns a July pool into a May-to-October one in a climate with a short season and a long shoulder.

Where the grade or the design calls for it, the frame and liner also allow partial recessing, so the pool can sit flush with a deck instead of above it.
