Why prefabricated container homes are suitable for Indonesia's earthquake-prone areas
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake off the coast of Indonesia on August 15 damaged nearly 12,000 homes and displaced more than 40,000 people. On the Pacific Ring of Fire, the question is not whether the next earthquake will come, but how quickly housing can be replaced when it does.

On August 15, 2026, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia, damaging nearly 12,000 homes and displacing more than 40,000 people, according to a 2026 ShelterBox earthquake response report. The event occurred in a year that also produced major earthquakes in the Philippines, Venezuela, and Colombia. Indonesia and the Philippines are both on the Pacific Ring of Fire; Colombia and Venezuela are located near active plate boundaries in South America and the Caribbean. Earthquake-prone countries, by definition, are countries that repeatedly rebuild housing — and that is where prefabricated container homes stop being novel and become a logistical decision.

What does “prefabricated” actually mean
Prefabricated container homes are not shipping containers cut up and fitted out. They are custom-made steel frames with interchangeable wall, roof, and floor panels that bolt together on site. That difference determines all that matters to buyers in earthquake-affected areas:
- Shipped flat-packed. Panels are shipped flat and stacked tightly, so shipping costs per unit are a fraction of a finished module, and an entire order can pass through a single port and be trucked inland by ordinary trucks.
- No welding and no wet trades. Assembly is by bolting. This means local labor can erect the units — useful when the skilled tradespeople usually relied upon are themselves displaced.
- It is a panel system, not a single object. A single damaged panel can be replaced without compromising the value of the entire unit, and the same panels can later be reconfigured into larger buildings, two-story blocks, or different layouts.
- Can be dismantled and moved again. When families return to rebuilt homes, the units are relocated or repurposed as classrooms, clinics, or kiosks.
Standard configurations
| System | Standard size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Prefabricated container home | 5950 × 3000 × 2800 mm | Bolted steel frame + interchangeable panels |
| Foldable container home (packaged) | 6000 × 3000 × 2840 mm | Bolted steel frame + interchangeable panels |
Sizes can be produced to client requirements. Panel core materials can be chosen — rock wool, glass wool, EPS, PU or PIR, magnesium oxide board, or phenolic — and floor boards are available in 15 mm and 18 mm thicknesses. All boards we use are asbestos-free. For humid tropical locations, panel core discussion usually centers on panel core, roof details, and ventilation, not the frame, which is the same in all configurations.
Patterns buyers keep asking for
In earthquake-affected markets, orders rarely come as single units. Orders come as batches for a village, a school district, a plantation workforce, or a resettlement site — and that changes what matters. Uniformity (every unit identical, so repair teams carry only one set of spare parts), a single panel system for residential and non-residential buildings, and a supplier who can produce the same specification again months later, are usually more important than the finish of a single unit.
We manufacture in Suzhou, China, and supply importers, contractors, and humanitarian procurement teams. If you are specifying for a location in Indonesia or Southeast Asia, send us an estimate of the number of occupants, site conditions, and number of units, and we will quote accordingly.
The units themselves
The image at the top of this article is a visualization. The photo below is not — it is a real unit, standing on a prepared foundation with doors and windows fitted into factory-finished panels. It is the same bolted panel system described above, shown in a finish we apply when clients have not yet specified color or cladding.
