X-Fold Container House: Fold Flat to Ship, Unfold to Live

Freight is often the largest single cost in delivering a modular building overseas. The new X-fold container house attacks that cost directly: its X-shaped folding frame compresses a complete living unit into a flat package under 400mm high, so as many as fourteen folded units load into a single 40HQ high cube container.

The X-Fold Mechanism

The core of the design is a pair of X-shaped steel trusses that carry the floor, walls and roof. During packing the trusses collapse inward, folding the wall panels and ceiling flat against the base. On site the unit is placed on level ground, the locking bolts are released and the trusses are pushed outward until they lock at 90 degrees, after which the roof panel is raised and fixed.

  • Packed thickness of only 350 to 400 mm per unit
  • Up to 14 units per 40HQ high cube container, cutting freight per unit by up to 85 percent
  • Stacked seven layers high with interlocking steel spacers to protect panels in transit
  • Unfolding and locking completed by three workers in 10 to 15 minutes
  • No crane or forklift needed — a standard telehandler is enough
  • Folded modules can be stacked for storage between projects

Designed for Rapid Deployment

The folding frame is welded as one continuous structure, so the unit arrives with the same rigidity as a fixed container after unfolding. Electrical wiring runs through flexible conduits that follow the fold, allowing lights, sockets and air-conditioning to be connected within minutes. Optional wet units include a compact shower, toilet and kitchenette built into the folded module.

Best-Fit Projects

  • Remote mining and infrastructure camps where freight dominates budget
  • Disaster relief and refugee housing programmes needing volume fast
  • Exhibitions, showrooms and pop-up retail
  • Rental fleets that relocate units between construction phases
  • Agriculture and forestry worker housing

Every X-fold unit is unfolded and inspected in the factory before packing, and each shipment includes a folding sequence video, torque specification sheet and spare gasket set. For buyers planning a camp of twenty units or more, our logistics team will prepare a container loading simulation and a site assembly schedule.
