A flat roof is a common feature in modular and shipping container architecture. However, "flat" should never mean "level." If water cannot quickly escape the top of the structure, it will inevitably find its way inside.
In many standard prefab container houses, the roof panels sit flush with, or even slightly below, the main structural roof beams.
This creates a "bathtub effect." Rainwater hits the roof and is blocked by the perimeter beams, leading to standing water. Over time, standing water degrades sealants, accelerates metal rusting, and inevitably leads to dripping ceilings inside the living space.
